TRAINING FARMERS ON USE OF GASIFIER STOVEKenya Updatefrom Athi RiverWe produce vegetable oils using ethically sourced ingredients from small-scale farmers across the world.Since our last editon the African operatons of Earthoil Plantatons Ltd. have become certfed carbon neutral. We have taken a massive step towards further improving our credentals by neutralising carbon emissions in Kenya. Our customers value sustainability very highly, so this is a signifcant step for the growing business.Special Projects Director, Miquel Boix Tomas, said, Cooking on open fres inside houses contributes towards over 1.5 million deaths per year worldwide, according to the WHO. By giving away gasifer stoves to most of its Kenyan tea tree farmers, we have cut harmful smoke, carbon monoxide and saved trees by helping communites to use less fuel.Gasifer stoves are less pollutng, smoke free and are much more efcient. This generates carbon credits for the company with which it can ofset its CO2 emissions of its own African operatons. Miquel Boix Tomas championed the scheme and contnues,This was an important initatve for us on many levels. Not only have we been able to achieve a certfcaton that our global customers appreciate, but more importantly, we’ve improved the lives of communites across the region.“”When compared with the open fre, the new stove has twice the thermal efciency, uses less than a third of the fuel, cuts poisonous carbon monoxide by a factor of 10 and smoke-borne partculates by a factor of 16. The wood-gasifer stoves can also use multple types of fuel, such as crop residues, not just frewood and gasifcaton yields reusable charcoal.“”
